Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) at Lilja

At Lilja School, we believe in creating a supportive, inclusive community that empowers every student to reach their full potential. Our PBIS program is an evidence-based framework designed to promote positive behavior and foster a nurturing school environment.

What is PBIS?

PBIS is a proactive approach that establishes clear behavioral expectations, teaches these expectations explicitly, and reinforces positive behaviors through a system of recognition and rewards. Research shows that implementing PBIS leads to improved student behavior, increased academic performance, and a more positive school climate.

Our Core Values

Lilja's PBIS program is built around our core values, which form the acronym PRIDE:

Perseverance

Respect

Inclusivity

Dependability

Empathy

These values guide our expectations for student behavior and help create a common language throughout our school community.

Key Components of Our PBIS Program

Clear Expectations: We define and teach clear behavioral expectations aligned with our core values.

Teaching Expectations: Through explicit instruction, role-playing, and modeling, we help students understand what is expected of them.

Positive Reinforcement: Our "Compliment System" recognizes and rewards students for demonstrating core values.

Data-Driven Approach: We regularly collect and analyze data to monitor behavior and the effectiveness of our interventions.

Tiered Support: We provide universal support for all students, targeted interventions for those who need additional help, and intensive support for students with significant behavioral needs.

Family and Community Engagement: We involve families and the community in supporting our behavioral expectations through regular communication and events.

Equity Focus: Our PBIS model is committed to promoting equity, inclusivity, and cultural responsiveness, actively working to create a supportive environment for all students.

The Compliment System

Students can earn "Compliments" for demonstrating core values. These Compliments are recognized at individual, classroom, and school-wide levels, contributing to a positive school culture.

Spot of the Week and School-Wide Rewards

Each week, we highlight a specific area or behavior as our "Spot of the Week." Staff members observe and recognize students who demonstrate our core values in this chosen context. When students collectively succeed in showing positive behaviors at the Spot of the Week, they earn school-wide Compliments. These Compliments accumulate over time, working toward exciting Whole School Rewards. This system helps reinforce positive behaviors throughout Lilja, creating a cycle of encouragement and celebration for our entire school community.

Whole School Celebrations
We believe in the power of celebration to build a strong, positive school community. Our periodic school-wide celebrations for K-4 students are more than just fun events – they're carefully designed experiences that reinforce our core values and foster a sense of belonging.

Research shows that these celebrations:

  • Enhance student engagement and motivation

  • Promote essential social-emotional skills like cooperation and respect

  • Reinforce our school's core values in a meaningful way

  • Build a positive school climate where every student feels valued

By actively involving students in planning and participating in these celebrations, we ensure that our core values are not just words on a wall, but living principles that guide our daily interactions. These joyful, shared experiences help make Lilja a place where every child can thrive, learn, and grow together.

Continuous Improvement

We are committed to consistently implementing and refining our PBIS practices. Through regular review and collaborative analysis, we ensure that our approach remains effective and responsive to our school community's needs.

By embracing PBIS, Lilja School is creating a positive, supportive environment where every student can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. We invite our families and community members to partner with us in reinforcing these positive behaviors and values both at school and at home.
