History of Lilja

A Legacy of Honor: The Lilja School Story
Nestled in the heart of Natick, Lilja School stands as a testament to bravery, sacrifice, and the enduring spirit of our community. Our school's rich history is intertwined with the heroic tale of the Lilja brothers, whose service to our nation during World War II and beyond continues to inspire us today.
In 1950, our school first opened its doors, named in honor of two local heroes: First Sgt. Ralph Lilja and PFC. George Lilja. These brothers made the ultimate sacrifice during World War II, with Ralph falling in the Battle of Saipan and George in the Battle of Peleliu Island. Their courage and dedication set the foundation for our school's values.
In 1996, Lilja School underwent a complete renovation, emerging in August 1997 as a modern learning environment while preserving its honorable legacy.
On August 13, 2011, our school's dedication expanded to celebrate all four Lilja brothers who served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII. This rededication, supported by resolutions from the Massachusetts Senate and House of Representatives, was a poignant reminder of the family's extraordinary service.
PFC George Lilja: Awarded the Navy Cross for Valor, Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
First Sgt. Ralph Lilja: Honored with the Purple Heart, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, and World War II Victory Medal.
Gunnery Sgt. Edwin Lilja: Received the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and Presidential Unit Citation.
PFC Verner A. Lilja, Jr.: Awarded the Purple Heart.
A fifth brother, Robert Lilja, continued the family's tradition of service, joining the USMC during the Korean Conflict.
Now home to approximately 450 students from Kindergarten through Grade Four, Lilja School continues to honor its namesake by fostering a community of learning, respect, and service. We are proud to carry forward the Lilja brothers' legacy, inspiring our students to embody the values of courage, dedication, and citizenship in their daily lives.
At Lilja, we are not just a school – we're a living tribute to heroism and a beacon of hope for future generations.
